2022, Oakland, California // Ohlone TerritoryI dyed this linen with 100% plant-based dyes. No synthetics or plastics. Here are the plant allies involved:
Next step will be to focus on locally grown plants. Most of these plants were grown abroad. For those curious, I used aluminum acetate as a mordant, and dyed the indigo separately from the other colors.
- Blue = indigo (Indigofera tinctoria, Fabaceae)
- Red = madder (Rubia tinctorum, Rubiaceae)
- Dark brown = Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula, Combretaceae)
- Light brown = Cutch (Acacia catechu, Fabaceae)
- Yellow = Weld (Reseda luteola, Resedaceae)
- Linen = Flax (Linum usitatissimum, Linaceae)
